1. It’s Pro-Life Chalking Day, which means the Pro-Lifers are out on campus writing hurtful things about how “feminists are pro-life” and overall just making it a sad day on campus for those who have gotten abortions or know someone who has, or even just sympathize with the choice. A REMINDER TO THOSE WHO ARE TRIGGERED AND HURT: people are here for you if you need to talk. Campus should be a safe space for everyone, and we are sorry at Feminists United if these messages are in any way harmful to you or those you care about. We respect the choice you made about your body and our opinion on that will never change.

You own your body and you do what you need to do for your own health.

  2. “Well what I would really like is a bunch of little n****** to wear long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties, you know in the Shirley Temple days, they used to tap dance around,” Jackson claims Deen told her. “Now, that would be a true Southern wedding wouldn’t it? But we can’t do that because the media would be on me about that.”

Is anyone surprised that she’s racist? (links to a Time article about her admitted use of the racial slur)

…sexual harassment suit against [Deen’s brother], claiming he downloaded pornography onto his computer in the office that he shared with Jackson. He also allegedly printed out photos of women having sex with each other with a caption reading, “Why Gay Marriage Should Be Legal.”

…and that her brother does shit like this? Yet she remains as popular as ever.

  3. Camille Cooper is coming to UMW as the Women’s History Month keynote speaker! She is a moving presenter, and will be discussing something very relevant to college students - the beauty industry. She describes this program as:
-Demonstrating how photo retouching, lighting and camera filters shape images
-Exposing media’s use of ‘formula” as a deliberate method of manipulation
-Illuminating culturally divisive effects resulting from use of fear and sex

It will be Tuesday, March 19 at 7 pm in the Great Hall. Hopefully we will see many of you there!

  4. “Dike” given as a synonym to lesbian, and simultaneously doesn’t have a definition related to lesbianism, while “dyke” is noted as an offensive term. Gay/homosexual definitions do not use derogatory words as synonyms, so why does lesbian?

  5. Your anger is UNDERSTANDABLE and ACCEPTABLE, do not let anyone invalidate your feelings.

Just last week I happened to be awake at 3 am and heard “go away, stop it” from outside my apartment window. Of course I was worried and wound up going outside with my cell phone and my pocket knife (the cell phone so I could pretend I was on it). I found a woman across…

  8. Sociologists use the term “androcentrism” to refer to a new kind of sexism, one that replaces the favoring of men over women with the favoring of masculinity over femininity. According to the rules of androcentrism, men and women alike are rewarded, but only insofar as they are masculine (e.g., they play sports, drink whiskey, and are lawyers or surgeons w00t!). Meanwhile, men are punished for doing femininity and women… well, women are required to do femininity and simultaneously punished for it.

I think the ‘women are required to do femininity and simultaneously punished for it’ bit sums up 90% of sexism in one sentence.
