Camille Cooper is coming to UMW as the Women’s History Month keynote speaker! She is a moving presenter, and will be discussing something very relevant to college students - the beauty industry. She describes this program as:
-Demonstrating how photo retouching, lighting and camera filters shape images
-Exposing media’s use of ‘formula” as a deliberate method of manipulation
-Illuminating culturally divisive effects resulting from use of fear and sex
It will be Tuesday, March 19 at 7 pm in the Great Hall. Hopefully we will see many of you there!
“Dike” given as a synonym to lesbian, and simultaneously doesn’t have a definition related to lesbianism, while “dyke” is noted as an offensive term. Gay/homosexual definitions do not use derogatory words as synonyms, so why does lesbian?

Sociologists use the term “androcentrism” to refer to a new kind of sexism, one that replaces the favoring of men over women with the favoring of masculinity over femininity. According to the rules of androcentrism, men and women alike are rewarded, but only insofar as they are masculine (e.g., they play sports, drink whiskey, and are lawyers or surgeons w00t!). Meanwhile, men are punished for doing femininity and women… well, women are required to do femininity and simultaneously punished for it.

I think the ‘women are required to do femininity and simultaneously punished for it’ bit sums up 90% of sexism in one sentence.
